RAF Scampton Tour Information

The RAF Scampton Heritage Centre Tour takes approximately 3 hours. You will be accompanied by an experienced Tour Guide for the duration of your visit. Your Tour Guide will ensure your on-site safety and can answer any questions you may have about the exhibits on display in the Heritage Centre collection. In the event of a fire or emergency drill (accompanied by an audible alarm) you are requested to follow the instructions of your Tour Guide.

Why do I need to pre-book, can’t I just turn up?

RAF Scampton is an operational military air base. To comply with military security requirements, all tours must be pre-booked and all visitors must comply with our security clearance process. For this reason, Visit Applications must be made at least two weeks in advance.

What do I need to bring with me?

On the day of your visit, you will report to RAF Scampton Guard House along with your Photo ID (preferably a passport) to complete the security arrangements prior to going on the tour. Individuals without proper identification (excluding members of Organised School Parties under the age of 16) will be refused entry to the station. You may also be subject to bag, vehicle and personal searches. Visitors unwilling to undergo such searches will be denied access to the station.

Is there anything I can’t bring on site with me?

For security reasons we request that visitors do not bring non-essential hand-luggage onto the station.

I’m a Foreign National, am I allowed on the tour?

We are used to welcoming tourists, service personnel, their friends and families from all over the world. However, Foreign Nationals are subject to additional security checks before entering the station. You will also be required to present your passport on the day of your visit. Please be advised that security checks take a minimum of 14 working days.

We accept visits from the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and most EU Countries. Foreign Nationals from other regions will need to pass additional security checks and in some cases Visit Application’s may be refused.

Please note; these requirements do not apply to children under the age of 16 who are visiting as part of an organised school party.

Will I be safe on an operational air base?

The safety of our staff, visitors and the local community is RAF Scampton’s number one priority. All of our Tour Guides are fully trained to ensure that your visit will be both safe and enjoyable. During the tour you may hear alarm tests or announcements, these are part of our normal operations and your guide will keep you advised as to what they mean.

Am I allowed to take photographs?

RAF Scampton is an operational military air base, to which the Official Secret Act applies and photography on site is strictly controlled. Cameras and mobile phone cameras are permitted and photographs may be taken within the RAF Scampton Heritage Centre Museum and outside the museum looking out towards the airfield. Photos are not to be taken of the internal technical area or associated security regime. If you wish to take photographs of any other areas within the station then please liaise with your Tour Guide to seek permission. Failure to abide by these rules may lead to removal from the station and confiscation of your camera by the Civil Police.
